  • The USA's First Lady, Jill Biden has been criticised for her tweet after the national team's draw to Portugal
  • The reigning world champions were far from their best despite qualifying for the knockout stages
  • They will face either Sweden or Italy in the round of 16

Football fans have mercilessly torn into the United States First Lady, Jill Biden after she shared a post on Twitter following the women's national football team's progression to the round of 16 at the ongoing Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The USA survived a late rally from Portugal to seal qualification and keep their hopes of becoming the first team to win three consecutive World Cups alive. They finished second in Group E behind the Netherlands, who thrashed Vietnam in their final group game.

But despite the qualification, the reigning champions were far from their best and were extremely lucky not to exit in the group stage. Portugal's substitute Ana Capeta struck the foot of the post in stoppage time.

It was another drab performance from Vlatko Andonovski's girls, who only scored three goals past debutants Vietnam before being held to a frustrating draw by fellow 2019 finalists, the Netherlands.

Different figures, led by legendary captain Carli Lloyd, have asked Andonovski to shake up things going forward if the team is to challenge for the title again.

What did FLOTUS say?

However, the FLOTUS read from a totally different script if her tweet is anything to go by, prompting furious reactions from fans. Taking to Twitter after the game, Mrs Biden tweeted;

"That was a game worth waking up early for! Great work, USWNT! Congratulations on advancing to the Round of 16!"

The game was held in the wee hours of the night in many parts of America. Fans couldn't comprehend how the game was worth waking up for, given that the four-time champions struggled to break down a resilient Portuguese side.

Fans reactions

@FxlrShawn said:

"With all due respect, whatever intern wrote this, you didn’t watch that match."

@Mags_zilla said:

"Hey, FLOTUS, did we watch the same game? Glad to be advancing, but we did so by the skin of our teeth. Gotta be a lot better than this to get past the next round."

@NoahS said:

"I don't know who wrote this, but we did not watch the same game."

@Andrea Marius tweeted:

"This tweet is more embarrassing than the match."

The USA will now wait for their next opponents, who are most likely to be Sweden. The Swedes are the third-ranked country by FIFA and currently lead Group G.

USWNT not singing national anthem

At the same time, the USA team has received a barrage of criticism online after it emerged that some players remained mum during the national anthem.

Footage has shown that only a few players sang the tune when it was belted out before their three group stage games, prompting fury from social media.

Whilst no player has given an official reason thus far, Sports Brief reported that it might be a message to fight against social inequalities back in their country.
