Al-Ahli has joined the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, Marco Verratti, as the French champions prepare to offload the Italian midfielder this summer.
Verratti looks set to become the next big superstar to leave Europe for Saudi Arabia after PSG received two bids from Al-Hilal and Al Ahli for the 30-year-old midfielder.
According to Get Football, Al-Ahli wants to hijack Al-Hilal’s bid to sign the midfielder after the latter’s bid of €30 million for Verratti was rejected by the reigning Ligue 1 champions.
PSG value the Italian at around €100mil and will accept nothing less for the veteran, who has spent over 11 years at Parc des Princes since joining the French club from Pescara.
Al-Ahli has already added Riyad Mahrez, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Edouard Mendy to their squad this summer and hopes to add Verratti to complete their summer raid of Europe.
Barcelona wanted Verratti for Dembele
Meanwhile, Barcelona were interested in acquiring the services of Verratti as part of the deal that would have seen Ousmane Dembele move to Paris Saint-Germain, Barca Universal reports.
The Catalan giants had considered asking PSG to include the 30-year-old midfielder in the deal for the Frenchman, who is keen to dump the La Liga club to move back to his home country.
However, Barcelona had to pull out of the chase for Verratti after reports that Saudi Pro League side, Al-Hilal, had tabled a bid for the midfielder and he was keen to move to the Gulf state.
