  • The Premier League and EFL will be subjected to a new set of rules from the new season
  • Among these new rules set to be introduced is one to curb time-wasting during matches
  • Matches could be played well over 90 minutes and sometimes reach the 100-minute mark

The new Premier League season is less than two weeks away and ahead of the new campaign, football fans can look forward to a number of radical changes to some of the rules of the game.

There will be a particularly keen interest in curbing time-wasting, with match officials set to handle things slightly differently as compared to previous campaigns.

As reported by Sports Brief in May, there were several football clubs who became notorious for wasting time during matches during the 2022/23 season.

Stats from Opta Analyst broke down clubs whose matches had the ball in play for the least number of minutes, and Newcastle were the biggest time-wasters, per Sports Brief.

As per the stats, with the ball in play, the Magpies spent the least time with the ball on the field with an average of 52 percent - translated to 51 minutes and 15 seconds.

On the other end of the scale, Manchester City had the highest rate of the ball in play among all other teams in the top flight with 61.8%, while Liverpool was second with 58%.

EPL, EFL introducing rule changes

As reported by Sky Sports, it will now be extremely rare for a Premier League or English Football League game to last for less than 100 minutes.

This is because the referee will be tasked with timing how long play has been stopped and the total minutes will end up being added as stoppage time.

The publication also reports there will be attempts to speed up play in EFL matches, which will entail having a multi-ball system for all the matches - as the Premier League already does.

Man United on losing streak

Sports Brief also reported on Manchester United being on a losing streak after defeats in three successive pre-season games so far.

Red Devils coach, Erik ten Hag has not rated his team's chances of Premier League success highly despite a third-place finish last term.

United were stunned by lower-tier side, Wrexham, suffered a frustrating defeat to Real Madrid, then lost against Borussia Dortmund.
