History was made on Sunday, July 30 as defender Nouhaila Benzina became the first-ever player to play a World Cup game in a hijab.
Benzina, 25, was crucial for her nation Morocco as they upset South Korea with a 1-0 win in their maiden World Cup tournament.
The game's only goal came from Ibtissam Jraidi, who struck a header in the sixth minute of the game.
For South Korea, it was a damaging defeat, which leaves them on the verge of elimination from the tournament if Germany avoid defeat against Colombia on Sunday, as reported on BBC.
Morocco, ranked 72nd in FIFA rankings, gave themselves a chance as they bounced back from a 6-0 defeat to Germany in their opening game.
Benzina makes history
A stand out moment from the game was the presence of Benzina, who wore an Islamic headscarf in her first appearance at the World Cup.
She missed Morocco’s first game of their tournament as she was unused substitute during the Germany mauling.
FIFA approved the wearing of head coverings for religious reasons in 2014, and it has taken nearly a decade to see a player actually wear one.
Other Group H result
In the other game in Group H, Germany found a late equalizer against Colombia in an entertaining encounter, but it as the Colombians who had the last say as they scored late on to secure a famous 2-0 victory.
