  • Sergi Roberto has claimed Barcelona wants to win the UEFA Champions League
  • Barcelona have failed to win the Champions League since their last triumph in 2015
  • Roberto won two Champions League titles with Barcelona in 2011 and 2015

Sergi Roberto already dreams of lifting the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona after being appointed the club’s new captain for the 2023/24 campaign.

Roberto was named as Barcelona’s captain following Gerard Pique's retirement and the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong are the other captains for next season.

The Catalan giants have gone eight years without winning Europe’s prestigious cup competition after their last triumph under Luis Enrique in 2015.

According to Sportskeeda, Roberto has now revealed their target for the new season is to emerge as winners of the Champions League, ending their long drought in Europe.

“In my mind, I have a picture of myself lifting the Champions League at Wembley this season.”

Barcelona has won the Champions League a total of five times in 1991-92, 2005-06, 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2014-15, with Roberto winning the last two with the Catalan giants after breaking into the club’s first team in 2010.

Barca cleared to play in UCL

Meanwhile, UEFA has confirmed that Barcelona are free to play in this season's Champions League after the authorities of any wrongdoings cleared the Catalan club, Goal reports.

In March, the reigning La Liga champions were charged with corruption over alleged payments made to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the vice president of Spanish football's refereeing committee.

However, the legal matter is still ongoing, and UEFA has not ruled out additional sanctions against the Catalan club. As things now stand, they will compete in Europe's top club tournament.

Barcelona to avoid European ban

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Barcelona are set to no longer forfeit their Champions League slot for next season, after Spanish police reportedly cleared the Catalan club over allegations of trying to influence referees.

The recently crowned La Liga champions have been under investigation by anti-corruption authorities for months over alleged payments made to former Spanish refereeing chief, Enriquez Negreira.

The Catalans are said to have paid €7.3 million to Negreira over the course of 17 years, from 2001 to 2018.
