  • Manchester United's main sponsor, Adidas, has reportedly agreed to have Mason Greenwood back
  • This could be a major game change in Greenwood's desire to make a comeback to professional football
  • The Red Devils are yet to communicate how they will proceed with the striker's situation

Mason Greenwood has received a major lifeline in his pursuit to return to professional football after Adidas reportedly approved his return.

Greenwood's future remains marred in uncertainty, with Manchester United yet to provide a clear guideline on how the teenager will be integrated back into the fold.

The teenage striker last played a competitive game of football in January 2022 before his career took a turn for the worst after he was accused of sexual assault and coercive behaviour. He was arrested, with the club suspending him from any activity, including training, pending the completion of his case.

In February this year, the Crown Prosecution Services dropped all charges against him, paving the way for a return to football, but so far, things have appeared to move at a slow pace for the player who recently welcomed his first child.

Return of Adidas

The Sun now reports that one of the major sponsors before hell broke loose, Adidas, has reportedly agreed on a framework to have him back. Adidas withdrew their support at the height of his court charges.

The report indicates that the initial round of talks have been positive, with Adidas reportedly keen on signing the 21-year-old again.

Stretty News adds that Adidas' decision could sway other sponsors to come back on board as well.

Adidas responds

However, in a quick rejoinder as relayed by Daily Star, a spokesperson of the company denied the claims.

"Adidas has had no discussions with Manchester United regarding any member of their playing squad"
"We play no role in any decisions made regarding any member of the team or staff at the club."

Greenwood spotted training in public

This comes at a time when Greenwood was spotted training for the first time since he was arrested and arraigned in court last year. The striker has been away from competitive football for more than 15 months following his sexual assault charges.

Sports Brief reported that with his future in Manchester still in limbo, the 21-year-old has seemingly taken steps to get back into shape ahead of a possible return to professional football.

He was spotted training for the first time since his tribulations began.

Background story to Greenwood's issues

Sports Brief has previously reported that Mason Greenwood's downward spiral has to be one of the most heartbreaking stories of modern-day football, depending on who you ask.

The striker was on an inspiring ascendancy in his Manchester United career when he got entangled in assault charges that saw him arrested and prosecuted before the charges were eventually dropped.

To the eyes of many others, the videos and pictures that went online believed to be from the assault incident tainted Greenwood's image. He might be free from court proceedings, but the court of public opinion is yet to move and therein lies United's greatest challenge.
