Where did American football originate? American football originated in Europe and was first known as Association Football. Over time, the game has penetrated numerous countries, each adopting unique rules and guidelines for the sport. So why is American football called football? Read on and discover more.

Why is American football called football?

The term 'football' has foreign roots and was not birthed in America. In the early 1800s, the term came from two European sports, soccer and rugby, both kicking games. Initially, the kicking sport was known as Association Football. However, the media shortened it to 'Assoc,' 'Soc,' and 'Socca,' and ultimately became known as soccer.

After years, soccer and rugby found their way into the American continent as a combination of the two sports. In 1906, forward passing was allowed in the field, and because the sport was a variation of the European football games, Americans adopted the name football but later changed it to soccer.

The rugby sport finds its roots in football. In 1823, 17-year-old William Webb Ellis picked up a football and ran with it in Rugby, a town in England, instead of kicking it over the goal line. William's move to run with the ball led to a change in the standard football rules, as the schoolboys knew it, to include more contact and tackling.

The game was now known as rugby football. In his honour, the men's Rugby World Cup trophy is named after him (The Web Ellis Cup). The early clubs were called rugby football clubs, although some have dropped 'football' over time.

Today, the sport has evolved in different countries. For example, the English people do not play American football. In Europe, rugby balls and footballs are two different things, and in America, the sports are entirely separate. In America, football now runs under the NFL (National Football League).

Football was previously used to describe any sport played on foot. The word 'soccer' has its roots in England and was used interchangeably with football until the 1980s. As the kicking sports spread to other continents like America, it underwent several variations adopted from football and rugby, and the name 'football' stuck. Americans have retained the term 'soccer' because the British stopped using it and adopted 'football'.

Why is North American football called football?

American football is sometimes called ''Gridiron football,'' especially in North America. In the 14th century, a gridiron was described as a metal grid for cooking over a fire. One of the unique defining factors of football was the playing field marked in a grid pattern resembling a gridiron.

The name was adopted after being used severally by sections of the media. However, as the game has evolved, the term has become less popular, and football is more commonly used, even in the northern part of the continent.

Handball is an entirely different sport from football. Despite football players using their hands, they use their feet to kick the ball. In handball, players pass, dribble, or hit the ball with any body part above the knee. Only the goalkeeper kicks the ball.

Why did American football start?

Several colleges and universities played football and rugby in the 1870s. Many institutions played a rugby-football hybrid until Walter Camp, also known as ''The Father of American Football,'' transitioned the sport to football exclusively.

The Yale alumnus played as a halfback at the university and was the team captain. He was also instrumental in forming the Intercollegiate Football Association (IFA). One of the significant changes the body implemented was removing the opening 'scrummage' and moved that a team give up the ball if they did not move down the field over a specified yard limit and the number of 'downs.'

Additionally, Camp introduced the 11-man team, the quarterback position, the line of scrimmage, and the scoring scale. Today, American football is the most popular spectator sport, bringing together citizens from all walks of life to enjoy their favourite NFL teams battle it out annually.

American football does not necessarily mean a sport that primarily uses the feet. The name has more to do with the roots of the activity and the variations it has undergone over time. There is an ongoing rivalry between the British and Americans, with the English claiming that they invented the name, but the Americans stole and renamed it.

Why is it called American football? The name's root is not primarily due to the use of both feet while playing. The numerous editions that have sprung up from Associated Football have helped to accommodate the guidelines that each country prefers. Today, each sport has an association that governs how it runs in every region.
