The Super Falcons of Nigeria produced a five-star performance against co-hosts, Australia, at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria's female team had to come from behind to defeat the impressive Matildas, who dominated most of the first half.

Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, made a number of saves to keep her side in the game, but could do nothing about Emily Van Egmond in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.

The ball found its way to the striker in the danger area before she coolly slotted a low drive past the Nigerian shot-stopper to put Australia ahead, Independent reports.

The Super Falcons restored parity with the last kick of the first half, after Rasheedat Ajibade’s effort was deflected into the path of Uchenna Kanu, who tucked home from close range.

Nigeria's female national side took the lead courtesy of an Osinachi Ohale header in the 65th minute and then substitute, Asisat Oshoala, scored a beauty in the 72nd minute to extend the lead for the Africans.

The Super Falcons endured a late scare as Alanna Kennedy pulled one back for Australia in stoppage time, but it came too little too late. The fianl score was Nigeria 3, Australia 2.

What's next for Super Falcons?

Following the victory, Nigeria move top of Group B with 4 points from two matches, having played to a goalless draw with Canada in their opening fixture of the tournament.

The Canucks are also on four points, Australia have three, while the Republic of Ireland are bottom of the group with zero points.

Nigeria next take on the Girls in Green in their final group game on July 31, and a draw will be enough to seal their qualification to the next round.

Zambia exit Women's World Cup

Sports Brief also reported on Zambia exiting the Women's World Cup and becoming the first African nation to be eliminated, after losing back-to-back in their opening two matches.

The Copper Queens remain at the bottom of Group C, having conceded five goals each against Japan and Spain, with their last match against Costa Rica being tagged as a formality.
