Leicester-born star Ashleigh Plumptre earlier explained why she switched allegiance to play for the Super Falcons of Nigeria.
The defender had featured for England’s Youth teams, including the U17, U19 and U23, but chose to represent Nigeria at the national team level.
The 25-year-old played a crucial role in Nigeria's 3-2 win over Australia at the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup as she was in action for 76 minutes.
Plumptre also played the full 90 minutes in their 0-0 draw with Canada Women in their opening fixture of the tournament.
The former LA Galaxy OC star once stated that she decided to play for the Super Falcons in order to uncover more about her heritage.
She qualified to play for Nigeria through her paternal grandfather, a Yoruba from Lagos and then made her international debut in July 2021.
Plumptre told Kelly Somers of Optus Sports, as per Daily Post:
She said:
“For me, I always say that I have to play football for more than just playing it itself. The same way that I chose to join Leicester because of my hometown’s club.
“With Nigeria, I wanted to uncover more of my heritage that I hadn’t delved into before because my dad is half-Nigerian and half-English. My grandad was born in Lagos.
“But I've been brought up very British, so, I want to join the Nigerian team where I got to experience food like this, experience more of the culture, I guess.”
