- Inter Milan's captain and Lukaku's former strike partner, Lautaro Martinez has lifted the lid on the embarrassing incident
Inter Milan captain, Lautaro Martinez has lifted the lid on the incident involving Romelu Lukaku and the club's board and players over a proposed permanent return to Italy.
Lukaku spent last season on loan at Inter Milan but struggled to recapture his former form due to fitness issues that plagued his first half of the season. However, he performed well in the second round.
He and Chelsea are now ready to put an end to a chaotic relationship that had only four months of good moments before an unsanctioned interview ruined his relationship with Thomas Tuchel.
The Blues want to cut their losses, and it is impossible to recoup the £97.5m paid for him in 2021 and place him on an astronomic wage of £325,000 per week.
Martinez disappointed in Lukaku
According to Di Marzio, Chelsea accepted an offer from the Nerazzurri worth £34m, including add-ons, but the player refused to pick up calls from any parties, including his former mates.
Martinez, who formed a deadly strike partnership with the Belgian to win Inter the Scudetto in 2021, has expressed his thoughts on the situation.
“I was disappointed, that’s the truth,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “I tried to call him, but he never picked up the phone and did the same with other teammates.
“After many years and many things experienced together, I was disappointed. However, it’s his choice, and I wish him the best.”
The call fiasco and the reports that the former Manchester United striker spoke to rivals Juventus angered the Milan club, and they pulled out of the deal, setting their sights on other targets.

Sports Brief reported that Mauricio Pochettino confirmed that Lukaku's Chelsea career is over after he was dropped from the club's squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.
Pochettino claimed the club is acting on the player's decision, which is to leave the club, though a move to Inter has collapsed, and Juventus are still assessing his situation.
