  • Zambia are the first African nation to crash out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup being hosted by Australia and New Zealand
  • The Copper Queens have conceded ten goals in two matches already, with the final group game a formality
  • Having already lost their opening game, Spain Women hammered the African side 5-0 in their second group fixture

Zambia Women are the first African side to crash out of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Copper Queens could not make it past the preliminary stages after back-to-back 5-0 losses in their opening two matches.

They remain bottom of Group C, having conceded five goals each against Japan and Spain, and their last match against Costa Rica is tagged as a formality.

Japan's 2-0 win over Costa Rica means the Asians and Spain are on six points each, enough to take them to the next round.

Zambia Women were unlucky against Spain as they started the game on a back foot yet again.

Teresa Abelleira Duenas opened the scoring as early as the 9th minute, while Jennifer Hermoso Fuentes made it two in the 13th minute.

Substitute Redondo then scored twice in the second half, either side of another Hermoso goal, as Spain cruised to victory, 5-0.

Channels TV reports that Zambia are already condemned to a first-round exit in their debut appearance at the World Cup after a second successive 5-0 hammering.

With the lively Barbra Banda leading the attack, Zambia had the majority of the crowd of almost 21,000 behind them but struggled to create chances.

Philippines impress at Women’s World Cup

Sports Brief earlier reported that five teams have advanced beyond the group stage at the first attempt out of the 17 sides who debuted in the World Cup in the 21st century.

The Philippines moved closer to joining that exclusive list after recording a stunning 1-0 upset victory over New Zealand on Tuesday.

As the Filipinas seek to create more history this coming Sunday against Norway, we look at the three sides who reached the knockout stage in their first World Cup appearance.
