- The Catalans are making a conscious effort to improve their finances after almost going bankrupt
- Barcelona’s financial crisis led to the departure of several first team players including Lionel Messi
Barcelona’s vice president Rafa Yuste has claimed that the Catalan club are on the right track in the fight against going bankrupt after making over €200m in savings from players’ wages.
The reigning La Liga champions have struggled in recent years to stay afloat after their financials were hit hard following mismanagement from the club’s previous administration.
According to Football Espana, Yuste has revealed the cooperation of the Barcelona players has been vital to the progress made after the club’s management explained their predicament to them.
“We have reduced the wage bill by almost €200m. We have been working very hard, talking to the players and trying to explain to them the harsh reality of what is happening at the club.
“We came from a club touched by death, which had no pulse. Thanks to the President and the board of directors, we have much more financial muscle.”
Several Barcelona players had been forced to leave or retire from the club due to their dire financial crisis, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets all casualties.
Barca transfer market not closed
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s first vice president Rafa Yuste has reassured that more reinforcements could still arrive at the Catalan club in the coming weeks, FCBN reports.
Ilkay Gundogan, Inigo Martinez, and Oriol Romeu have all joined the La Liga champions this summer, but Xavi is still pushing for more signings as they aim to compete favourably in all competitions this season.
Barcelona have failed to progress beyond the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in the last two seasons, and Xavi wants that to change in the 2023/24 edition.
