FootballMessi or Ronaldo? When Usain Bolt 'Settled' the GOAT Debate
- Usain Bolt achieved legendary status after winning at least 19 gold medals in major championships
- He is held in high regard, probably the same way fans feel about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
- Like anybody else, the Jamaican had an opinion on who he thought was a better player of the two
Usain Bolt is the most decorated sprinter of all time, having collected eight gold medals and 11 world titles during his competitive days.
He shattered every record and to date, he still holds three world records: 9.58 seconds in the 100-metres, 19.19 seconds in the 200-metres, and he was a part of the Jamaican relay team that set the 36.84-second world record in 2012.
After his retirement in 2017, Bolt tried his hand at football, taking trials with Borussia Dortmund and Australian club, Central Coast Mariners, per Sports Brief.
Unfortunately for him, he did not have the same success on the pitch as he had on the track.
Bolt makes his GOAT pick
Bolt is a staunch Manchester United fan and has been seen attending the Red Devils' games a couple of times.
Therefore, perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that he went for Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi when he was asked to pick his greatest player of all time in 2021.
However, the father of three was left at a crossroads given his love of Argentina.
"It is difficult for me to choose because I support Argentina, but I am a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo," Bolt said at the time, as quoted by GMS.
The Jamaican sprint legend's connection with Man United seemingly made it easier for him to settle on one star.
"I admire Ronaldo since he played for Manchester United and I support the Red Devils. I think he has something more than Messi because he has proven himself in many leagues. That's why I choose Ronaldo."

FootballIt would be interesting to get Bolt's opinion now after Messi's exploits at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he finally laid his hands on the elusive trophy.
Drogba calls the GOAT debate
Sports Brief has also reported on Didier Drogba being among a number of top-tier footballers who previously delved into the ever-divisive Ronaldo versus Messi debate.
The argument over which of the two football superstars is the greatest player of all time has consistently divided many across the sports spectrum and international lines.
For his part, Ivorian legend, Drogba chose Ronaldo as the GOAT when he was asked who he believed the better player of the star duo was, claiming it was 'a known fact'.
