  • Brazil opened their 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup campaign with a 4-0 win over Panama
  • Young striker, Ary Borges grabbed all the headlines with a hat-trick on her World Cup debut
  • The South Americans may have scored the goal of the tournament with their third goal

Brazil got off to a flying start in their opening game of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup with a 4-0 win over Panama and may have scored the goal of the tournament contender.

The South Americans entered the competition having previously not won the Mundial despite dominating the Copa America Feminina. Their best outing was a second-place finish in 2007.

They are among the favourites to win this year's event in Australia and New Zealand alongside Euros winners England, Germany, and the winner of the last two tournaments, the USA, amongst others.

Selecao Feminina will have to take on this tournament partly without their legend and captain, Marta, who just recovered from a severe injury that may limit her appearances.

Brazil score stunning goal

Ary Borges may be the talk of the moment after scoring a debut hat-trick, but that was not all Brazil did in their 4-0 crushing of Panama.

The 23-year-old opened the scoring in the 19th minute before adding her second just before halftime. She scored her third and Brazil's fourth in the 70th minute, after which she broke down in tears.

According to National World, the third goal began with Debinha exchanging a neat one-two with Adriana, then Borges controlling a left-wing cross wonderfully before taking out two players with a back-heel to Beatriz Zaneratto João, who smashed into the roof of the net.

Many fans see the goal as a potential goal of the tournament unless a better one is scored, with three weeks remaining.

Marta confirms final WWC

Sports Brief reported that Marta confirmed the 2023 WWC will be her last as she hopes to capture the last piece of silverware of her career.

She has featured in five tournaments, and despite being the competition's top scorer with 17 goals, she is yet to win it, with her best outing being a losing attempt to Germany in 2007.
