- Amakhosi stars could not speak after a draw against Baroka in their final game proved to be too costly
It’s been over 13 years since Kaizer Chiefs lost the DStv Premiership title on the last day of the season, but the memories are still fresh as ever for Bernard Parker.
Die Hond recently reflected on the title loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2019/20 season, explaining what it was like in the Amakhosi dressing room after the game.
As noted by The South African, Parker explained there was a sad feeling in the dressing room after the game.
“I could not see what the dressing room looked like. My head was in my hands, looking down at the ground. It was so quiet that you could even hear a pin drop,” he said.
“No one could speak because usually, after the game, we would pray, but we stood so long in that changing room that the guys did not want to shower. No one wanted to do anything; we were all numb. It felt like a sword that went through the heart,” Parker added.
That would be the closest Chiefs would come to winning the title in the last five years, as Sundowns have gone on to dominate.
How Chiefs lost the league
Chiefs were leading the Covid-affected league for most of the season but were forced to play their final eight home games behind closed doors.
As noted by eNCA, Chiefs needed to beat Baroka on the final day of the season but could only manage a draw. Sundowns secured a victory in their last game and leapfrogged the Amakhosi to the title by two points.
