  • Erik ten Hag had to be pulled away from the referee during Manchetser United's friendly against Arsenal
  • It was Bruno Fernandes' first game as the club's new captain following Harry Maguire's removal
  • It was a good day in office as the Red Devils beat the Gunners 2-0

Bruno Fernandes began his reign as the official Manchester United captain on a high as he helped his side in beating Arsenal during a pre-season friendly in the United States of America on July 22.

Fernandes and Jadon Sancho got a goal a piece to continue with Erik ten Hag's perfect start to pre-season games. The Red Devils also won the mandatory penalty kicks after the game.

It was Fernandes' first game as captain after ten Hag gave him the official armband. Harry Maguire was stripped of captaincy duties after an underwhelming season under the Dutchman.

The Portuguese midfielder had to pull away his own manager during the Arsenal game. The manager appeared to be incensed with a decision made by the officials and made sure they got an earful on the stroke of half-time.

As GMS reports, the former Ajax manager was angry that a penalty was not awarded to his side. So mad was ten Hag that Fernandes had to pull him away from the official.

Why ten Hag chose Fernandes as captain

Sports Brief reported that ten Hag pointed out the key attributes he sees in the Portuguese midfielder that made him fit for the skipper of one of English football's greatest clubs.

"I chose Bruno because he is a great inspiration. He is an example. He always wants to be a better football player, working very hard to give his maximum performance."
"He is the mirror for many players, and he is a good social connector. He is also very good at game understanding. So, for a manager, it's very good to have that intermediary on the pitch."

Manchester United will now face Wrexham United before taking on Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in other preseason friendlies. They will open their new season campaign against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 14.
