Hildah Magaia Scores Banyana’s Second Women’s World Cup Goal As SA Lead Sweden
Hildah Magaia has given all South Africans a reason to celebrate.
Banyana's striker grabbed the team's second-ever goal in the FIFA Women's World Cup when she netted against Sweden.
The Women's Africa Cup of Nations Champions are taking on the number-three-ranked side in the world in their opening game of the tournament.
After heading into the break 0-0, South African came out of the blocks with great intent as Magaia grabbed the game’s first goal.
Thembi Kgatlana, who was tormenting the Swedish defence, fired a shot on goal which could only be pushed away by the goalkeeper. Magaia pounced on the loose ball and bundled it into the net.
Prior to the goal, Banyana had only ever scored once at the tournament. Kgatlana grabbed the side’s previous only goal during the 2019 World Cup when she scored against Spain.
Sadly for Magaia, there wasn’t much chance to celebrate as she was injured in the aftermath of scoring. She had to be taken off, and Banyana will be sweating over her fitness for the rest of the tournament.
