Details have finally emerged on why Manchester United summer signing Andre Onana did not make his debut for the club against Arsenal.

United locked horns against the Gunners in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, July 22, during the two clubs' ongoing tour of the US.

Onana was expected to make his bow for the Red Devils during the clash, having recently linked up with the squad after he completed his Old Trafford move.

However, the Cameroonian was not involved in the tie despite initially being spotted warming up at MetLife Stadium.

Erik ten Hag instead opted for veteran Tom Heaton to start between the sticks, with Nathan Bishop deputising him from the bench.

Why Onana was overlooked vs Arsenal

The Mirror reports Onana was potentially not involved in the encounter as he did not have time to prepare for the tie.

The 27-year-old is understood to have flown to Birmingham last week Tuesday before journeying up to Manchester to complete his medical and the remaining formalities the following day.

Onana then flew to the US on Thursday to link up with his teammates despite his hours of travelling.

That means the shot-stopper had just one day of training before the Arsenal clash, making him unavailable for the Arsenal match.

The ex-Ajax ace will be replacing David de Gea, who recently quit the Theatre of Dreams after 12 years with United.

According to ESPN, the Red Devils splashed out an eyewatering €50 million to land the Cameroonian from Inter Milan.

Man United, Arsenal stars clash

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Manchester United vs Arsenal pre-season clash was more than a friendly meeting as the two Premier League sides renewed their rivalry in the United States.

The publication reports that two glaring mistakes by the Gunners led to the two goals, with Fernandes opening the scoring from the edge of the box after a massive blunder from Aaron Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal.

Beyond the goals, another on-pitch moment involving players from both teams became a major talking point.
