  • The Women’s World Cup game between Australia and Ireland had an interesting subplot involving three players
  • Tempers almost boiled over when Ireland star Ruesha Littlejohn confronted Australia’s Caitlin Foord
  • Foord was reportedly spotted holidaying with Littlejohn’s ex, who is also in the Ireland national team

It is not every day you get a love triangle inside a football pitch, but there were hints of that on Thursday, July 20 in the World Cup game involving Ireland and Australia.

There were hints of tension between two players, Ruesha Littlejohn of Ireland and Australia’s Caitlin Foord.

Footage that has gone viral on social media shows Littlejohn snubbing the pre-match handshake from Foord as she pulled back her hand before greeting the next Australia player.

Fans who have been keen on the two’s feud instantly speculated that the snub was related to Littlejohn’s recent break up with her partner, who happens to be Ireland captain Katie McCabe.

The couple spent seven years together, but according to The Sun, separated just before the World Cup started.

It just so happens that McCabe and Foord, despite being rivals on the pitch on Thursday, are actually good friends, and they both play for Women's Super League giants Arsenal.

Tempers flare

At full time, Littlejohn confronted Foord and leaned towards the Australian with her finger pointed at her as things threatened to get ugly.

It took the intervention of an Ireland player to separate the two ladies, with sources cited on The Sun saying LittleJohn bears some resentment at how things ended with McCabe.

This could have been brought about by photos of McCabe and Foord on holiday together, barely days after Littlejohn’s break up with the latter.

As far as the game went, Australia claimed a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a penalty by Stephanie Catley.

Women World Cup fever grips WWE stars

Sports Brief also reported on how the World Cup fever has gripped WWE stars barely days into the competition.

While 32 teams are vying for the trophy in Australia and New Zealand, WWE’s superstars are proving they also have some fancy footwork.

The WWE recently took to social media to showcase how some superstars fared with a ball at their feet. Easily the most impressive were Rhea Ripley and Giovanni Vinci.
