  • Catherine Musondo made some impressive saves in the first half against Japan

  • Some fans questioned why Musondo was shown two yellow cards in the game

Zambia’s FIFA Women’s World Cup debut will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

The Copper Queens went down 5-0 to Zambia and were reduced to 10 players after Catherine Musondo was shown a second yellow card.

The Zambian keeper was first shown a yellow card in the second half when she brought down Fujinho in the box, The Guardian reported.

A penalty was awarded but later rescinded. However, the yellow card stood.

Musonda was given her marching orders in the 97th of the game when she received a second yellow, again for taking out another player in the box.

While some fans questioned why Musonda’s first yellow wasn’t rescinded, despite the overturned decision, others questioned why she would commit a silly foul so late in the game when the team was already down 4-0.

Here's how social media responded to the red card:

@pmcpface:

“Why was the Zambia keeper's first yellow card not rescinded after the penalty was overruled for offside?”

@All_Terrain10:

“The Zambia keeper shouldn’t have been sent off. The first yellow should have been rescinded as the foul was overturned because of offside.”

@GamerJamesFM:

“Feel sorry for Zambia keeper Catherine Musonda. Sent off for a second yellow when her first was for giving away a penalty that was overturned.”

@MarkHalliwell1:

“Zambia keeper sent off for two yellows. But first came for a challenge to concede a pen which was then reversed for offside. So should her first booking have been cancelled? What's the law?”

@LazuliButterfly:

“Oh lord, that was silly from the Zambia keeper, especially at that point in the game.”

@BenEt_II:

“This has been an embarrassing performance from Zambia. Only the keeper Musonda seemed like she was in a world cup match and even that ended with her getting sent off.”

Nigerian player sets unwanted record

Nigerian forward Deborah Abiodun set an unwanted record for Nigeria at the 2023 Women's World Cup, becoming the first player to be red-carded at the tournament.

The 2023 Women's World Cup is taking place in Australia and New Zealand, and the Super Falcons played their first game at the tournament against Canada. The match ended in a draw.

Deborah Abiodun was first given a yellow card in the first half after a tackle against Christine Sinclair, Sports Brief reported, before picking up a second later.
