Lionel Messi needed only 35 minutes to open his Inter Miami account after he powered in a beautiful freekick on July 21.

Messi was in action for the very first time for his new side after sealing that sensational move to the Major League Soccer when they faced Cruz Azul in the League's Cup.

Robert Taylor opened the scoring for Inter Miami on the stroke of halftime before Messi and his former Barcelona teammate, Sergio Busquets, were introduced seven minutes after the break. The duo ran the show with every touch and turn, wildly celebrated at the DRV PNK Stadium.

Despite the presence of the two, Azul fought their way back with Uriel Antuna equalizing proceedings. With the game on the brink of penalties, Messi was fouled on the edge of the area in stoppage time.

The Argentine stepped up and bent a freekick past the wall in characteristic fashion as the ball wheezed past Andres Guillermo in the Azul goal to gift Miami maximum points.

He then raced pitchside to celebrate with his family before both sets of players angled to get a handshake or a hug with him after the final whistle.

Messi's next task will be to lift Tata Martino's side from the foot of the Eastern Conference. Miami need to close the 12-point gap between them and DC United to be able to make it to the playoffs.

LeBron James attends Messi's debut

Sports Brief has also reported that celebrities flocked to DRV PNK Stadium to watch Messi play, including Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who made the trip to Miami to see his fellow sports icon play.

He was seen entering the arena wearing a hat, white shirt, and shorts. The main star of the show, however, was Messi, who got massive cheers from fans when he arrived at the stadium ahead of his debut.

James was later seen hugging Messi inside the stadium before the game started.
