FootballLiverpool Ace Diogo Jota Inadvertently Aims Dig at Outgoing Stars After 4-2 Win in Friendly
- Liverpool won in a six-goal thriller against German second-tier side Karlsruher
- The Reds looked good on Wednesday, with forward Diogo Jota scoring twice
- Jota, in his post-match interview, praised his side’s new signings with a subtle dig at Liverpool’s previous style of play
Liverpool ace, Diogo Jota may have inadvertently taken a dig at his outgoing teammates with comments made after his team’s 4-2 win over Karlsruher in a friendly match on Wednesday.
The Portuguese striker was on target with two goals in a minute to add on to Darwin Nunez's and Cody Gakpo's goals against the Bundesliga 2 side.
Nunez opened the scoring in the third minute at the BBBank Wildpark stadium, but Karlsruher drew level through Lars Stindl.
The home side then took a surprise lead thanks to Sebastian Jung, with the veteran Stindl heavily involved in the build-up.
It was then Gakpo’s turn to bring the game level, as he benefited from Jota’s knockdown to equalize.
The two combined again in stoppage time as Jota found his first goal of the game, and the Portuguese forward doubled his tally after being fed a decent ball by summer signing, Alexis Mac Allister.
Jota’s remarks after the game
At full-time, Jota made some interesting remarks as he hailed two of Liverpool’s summer signings, Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
According to Jota, it was easier to play with the pair because they ‘saw passes’.
“I really like these kind of players. They can see the passes. You just have to make the runs and they will see it,” he said, as seen in a video shared by @LFC_Jota20.
“That’s amazing. I’ve started to see I can link up very well with him.”
These sentiments were quite interesting, especially with the number of midfielders that have left Liverpool this summer.
Why Barcelona should retain Brazilian attacker Raphinha this season
FootballAlex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Fabinho, and, more recently, Jordan Henderson are among the players who have left or are on the verge of departing Anfield ahead of the new season.
Some fans on social media saw Jota’s sentiments as one that came from a point of relief because Liverpool are sometimes known for playing long balls.
A notable absentee from the game was Liverpool captain, Henderson, who is on the verge of joining Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Arabia Pro League, according to the BBC.
Henderson travelled with the Liverpool squad to Germany but did not feature in the game as Al-Ittihad have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to sign him.
Arsenal fans praise Timber
Elsewhere, Arsenal fans praised Jurrien Timber after his impressive debut for the Gunners on Thursday.
Mikel Arteta’s side gave fans a glimpse of what is to come next season as they comfortably beat MLS All Stars 5-0.
Timber made clever runs going forward and also exhibited composure on the ball.
