- Enyimba chairman Nwankwo Kanu has finally spoken about coach Finidi George
- There have been reports that Finidi has been sacked as the coach of Enyimba
- Kanu has however explained that the reports are not true
Nwankwo Kanu, the new chairman of Nigerian Professional Football League champions, Enyimba FC, has rubbished reports that Finidi George has been sacked as the club's coach.
Recently, the former Super Eagles star recorded his name in the history books after helping the Aba-based club to win their ninth Nigerian Professional Football League title.
The former Ajax Amsterdam winger has also helped Enyimba qualify for this year's CAF Champions League tournament due to their Nigerian league victory.
On July 17, rumours began to circulate in the Nigerian sports media that Finidi had been told to leave his position as the head coach of Enyimba despite his success with the team.
According to the reports by Punch and Complete Sports, Kanu dismissed these claims as nothing but speculation, confirming that the former Nigerian international was still in charge of the side.
Kanu confirms Finidi is coach
"No, we did not sack Finidi. He is our coach and we are happy with him," Kanu stated.
Finidi, who signed a two-year deal with the Aba giants in 2021, is negotiating a new contract with Enyimba with his current contract set to expire in September.
Sports Brief spoke exclusively with Yemi Olarenwaju, who was Finidi's assistant coach at Enyimba last season, and he claimed the club had told him and others to re-apply for their positions.
"We have been told to reapply, which I have done and [I am] awaiting their response, because I want to continue working for this club. Nobody was sacked because the new process of telling coaches or staff to reapply is not new to us," he explained.
