  • Manchester United have completed the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan
  • The Cameroonian goalkeeper becomes the ninth player United have signed from the Serie A since 2000
  • Cristiano Ronaldo was the last to move directly from the Italian league to Old Trafford

Manchester United have fulfilled Erik ten Hag's wish of having a ball-playing goalkeeper by signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan for a reported fee of £50m.

Long-serving goalkeeper, David De Gea was allowed to leave at the expiration of his contract having endured spates of criticism in his final season over his poor footwork.

Sports Brief looks at the last eight players the Red Devils signed from the Italian Serie A, as first analysed by Planet Football.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

It was a hugely emotional homecoming when the Red Devils brought back Cristiano Ronaldo, after he first left the club in 2009. He excelled at both Real Madrid and Juventus. He scored 18 league goals in his first season back, but his season under ten Hag wasn't favourable and his contract was terminated in January and he joined Al-Nassr.

2. Amad Diallo

According to The Athletic, the Red Devils splashed £37m for the Ivorian, despite the fact that he played only four league games for Atalanta. He spent last season on loan at Sunderland and nearly helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League. It remains to be seen if the Dutch tactician will have him in the first team next season.

3. Paul Pogba

He was allowed to join Juventus for free in 2012, and four years later he was brought back for a world-record fee. A divisive figure throughout the six years of his second spell, it appeared that he mentally retired after the 2018 World Cup. He returned to Turin last summer.

4. Matteo Darmian

The Italian fullback was signed from Torino and after four years of failing to make the right-back position his, he was sold to Parma. He made a move to Inter Milan and won the Italian Serie A title, alongside four other ex-United players. He also started the 2023 UEFA Champions League final.

5. Sergio Romero

The 2014 FIFA World Cup finalist joined United from Sampdoria in 2015 and was an able deputy to De Gea. He was in goal throughout the 2017 UEFA Europa League triumph under Jose Mourinho. The Argentine spent a year at Venezia before returning home to Boca Juniors.

6. Giuseppe Rossi

The talented Italian joined United from Parma as a 17-year-old in 2004 and was placed straight into the first team. A plethora of attacking talents ahead of him and decimating injuries meant he never cut it in red.

7. Juan Sebastian Veron

The Argentine midfielder moved to Old Trafford from Lazio for a British record fee in 2001. He is often regarded as a flop due to not recapturing his Serie A form. He was sold to Chelsea but couldn't make it work. He spent a season on loan at Inter Milan and was crucial to their 2005/06 Scudetto-winning team.

8. Laurent Blanc

Manchester United lost five games in the Premier League after signing the Frenchman, and their names began with the first letters of his last name: Bolton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, and Chelsea. He came in too old at 35, six years after Sir Alex Ferguson first wanted him.

5 facts about Andre Onana

Sports Brief previously analysed five facts about Andre Onana, the top of which is that he played under new boss Ten Hag at Ajax and clashed with the Dutch manager before he left Ajax for Inter Milan.

The goalie, who came through Samuel Etoo's academy in Cameroon, retired internationally after a feud with head coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
