Harry Maguire revealed on Sunday that he had lost his position as Manchester United's captain.

The £80 million defender received the armband from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer upon his transfer from Leicester City in 2020, but the England international will be replaced due to his lack of playing time under Erik ten Hag.

According to Daily Star, Maguire became United's fourth captain in as many seasons. He is the club's 11th captain in the Premier League era as the turbulence at Old Trafford continued under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer.

Although a replacement has not yet been named, Ten Hag will replace Maguire to advance his United makeover.

Throughout the season, Bruno Fernandes held the armband while Maguire sat on the sidelines, per Mirror UK.

In light of the end of another United skipper, Sports Brief has ranked the top six Manchester United captains of the Premier League era.

5. Bryan Robson (1992-1994)

Since 1982, Captain Marvel, as he was affectionately known by United supporters, served as the club's captain during the Premier League era.

In addition to winning the Premier League in 1993 and 1994, Robson also won the Cup Winners Cup, European Super Cup, League Cup, FA Cup, and the club's first league title in 26 years.

5. Steve Bruce (1994-1996)

Bruce joined United in 1987, and for his final two seasons at Old Trafford, he was named club captain.

Before departing after the 1995–96 season, the stalwart played 414 games in total for United, winning two Premier League championships and the FA Cup in his role as captain.

4. Eric Cantona (1996-1997)

The King became the first player from outside the country to lead United, and his popularity with the team and fans made him the ideal manager.

Cantona led his team to the Premier League title, 15 goals, and a shocking 'Au Revoir' to Old Trafford and football in his only season as captain.

3. Nemanja Vidic (2011-2014)

Sir Alex Ferguson gave the enormous Serb the chance to take over as captain from Gary Neville, and his partnership with Rio Ferdinand was essential to United's Premier League victories in 2011 and 2013.

Vidic signed with InterMilan in 2014 at the end of his contract following a disastrous campaign under David Moyes.

2. Gary Neville

Neville has led the team for the second-longest period of time in the Premier League, and his trophy collection reflects that.

2008 saw Neville, who served as captain, win two Premier Leagues, three League Cups, and the Champions League. He suffered from injuries in his later years, but he was still an important lieutenant for Sir Alex.

1. Roy Keane

Keane accepted the unfortunate task of succeeding Cantona as United captain, but he more than lived up to the hype as his fierce and passionate demeanour inspired United to complete the treble in 1999, scoring the infamous "captain's goal" against Juventus in the Champions League semifinal.

As the club's captain, Keane made 480 appearances while winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the Champions League.

Maguire receives pay rise

Sports Brief reported that Maguire received a pay rise after United qualified for the UEFA Champions League next season, thus making his exit even more difficult.

He has a contract till 2025 and is on £190,000 per week, which could rise above £200,000 due to a Champions League-linked pay rise in his contract.
