  • Chelsea are having a mass summer clearout, which has seen Mason Mount and Kai Havertz leave
  • Mount left Chelsea after 18 years and headed for rivals Manchester United, while Havertz joined Arsenal
  • Both have had their debuts for their new clubs, and the indications going into the new season are not good

Mason Mount and Kai Havertz will not want to remember their debuts away from Chelsea after their first games for Manchester United and Arsenal, respectively.

Chelsea's mass exodus saw the two players leave Chelsea. They had previously combined to win the club's second UEFA Champions League trophy in 2021 against Manchester City.

Both missed great goal-scoring chances in one half of the football they played, prompting Sports Brief to look back on some of the most embarrassing football debuts, including Lionel Messi's.

1. Lionel Messi

Messi may have three international trophies now, but his Argentina debut ended in disaster and left him in tears in the dressing room. He was given his debut by Jose Pekerman as a 63rd-minute substitute against Hungary and was sent off two minutes later for a foul on Vilmos Vanczak.

2. Jonathan Woodgate

Woodgate had possibly the worst debut of all time. He joined Real Madrid in August 2004 but didn't debut till September 2005 due to injuries. However, he scored an own goal with a diving header in the 24th minute before he was sent off in the 66th minute for a second bookable foul.

3. Gervinho

After scoring twice in his pre-season debut, the Ivorian was probably not informed to steer clear of Joey Barton in his competitive debut. He was sent off after clashing with the notorious midfielder, which earned him a three-game ban for violent conduct.

4. Emmanuel Frimpong

Frimpong had two very forgettable debuts. He was sent off on his Arsenal debut for two yellow cards. The Gunners sold him to Barnsley in January 2014, a club he was reluctant to go to due to not being able to draw girls, as reported by Bleacher Report. He got sent off on his debut again and was released after four months.

5. Marcos Antonio

The Brazilian centre-back was handed his Bundesliga debut at Nuremberg, and within 30 seconds, he passed to Vedad Ibisevic to open the scoring and repeated the same mistake a few minutes later but was fortunate it did not lead to a goal. He was substituted in the 16th minute, never to be seen in the league again.

6. Thiago Silva

The veteran defender captained Chelsea on his debut against West Brom; he lost possession for the second goal as the Blues went into halftime 3-0 down. He was substituted after 60 minutes before Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Tammy Abraham equalised.

7. Joao Felix

The Portuguese spent the second half of last season on loan at Stamford Bridge. He was a bright spark on his debut against Fulham but was red-carded for a reckless challenge. He missed three games, which FourFourTwo reports cost the club £2.8 million in loan fees and wages.

Arteta assesses Havertz's debut

Sports Brief reported that Mikel Arteta asked for patience to find Kai Havertz's best position after the German put up a poor display on his debut against Nuremberg.

He probably had a worse debut than former teammate Mount, who was mocked by fans for blazing a shot wide over the bar from a promising position and attempting to chip the goalkeeper from outside the box.
