FootballFIFA World Cup: Bafana Bafana Could Be Drawn Alongside African Giants in Upcoming Draw
- South Africa will find out who they will be drawn against in the upcoming qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup
- Bafana Bafana could face the likes of Senegal, Egypt, Nigeria, and even Morocco, but won't face off against Ghana
- Nine African teams are guaranteed a spot in the tournament that will be hosted in Mexico, Canada, and the United States
With AFCON qualification done and dusted, Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Having last appeared in the tournament in 2010, when they hosted it, South Africa will be looking to become one of nine African sides guaranteed a spot in the tournament.
The upcoming tournament will feature 48 sides competing to be world champions, meaning more African sides will feature in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
How qualification works for Africa
As noted by FIFA, CAF qualification will feature nine groups of six teams playing on a home and away basis. The winners of each group will represent Africa in the World Cup.
The four best-ranked group runners-up will go into a play-off, with the winner representing Africa in an inter-confederation play-off.
The inter-confederation play-off features one team from every confederation except UEFA, and the winner will earn a spot at the World Cup.
Bafana could face tough draw
As noted by Kick Off, Bafana Bafana are ranked outside the top nine countries on the continent, and therefore will be grouped alongside one of the top nine for qualification.
They could be grouped with either Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, or Cote d’Ivoire.
As part of the second tier of countries, they will avoid Burkina Faso, Ghana, Caper Verde, Guinea, Zambia, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea.

FootballJordaan’s ultimatum to Broos
Sports Brief previously reported how Hugo Broos was tasked with taking Bafana Bafana to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.
South African Football Association president, Danny Jordaan said the first task was AFCON and then the World Cup qualifiers.
With just Morocco and Liberia in their group, Jordaan believed there was no excuse for the side not to qualify.
