The world’s oldest footballer, Kazuyoshi Miura is set to continue his playing career well into his late 50s after signing a contract extension with Portuguese outfit Oliveirense.
Miura joined Oliveirense on loan from Yokohama FC in January, and went on to make three appearances for the club, all from the bench.
In total, he has played 28 minutes for the Portuguese club, and could get in more minutes thanks to his loan extension.
Oliveirense, who have the same owners as FC Yokohama, made the announcement that Miura would extend his stay at the club for the new season, and could effectively feature as early as July 15, when the team takes on Fafe in a friendly.
Kazuyoshi Miura’s lengthy career
As seen on Transfermkt, Miura began his career in 1986, when the likes of Wayne Rooney, who is now retired, were born.
His career began in Brazil with FC Santos, because at the time, Japan did not have a proper footballing scheme.
Better known as ‘King Kazu’, the veteran footballer played for Yokohama FC since 2005, although he also had stints in Italy.
He also played for Dinamo Zagreb, Kyoto Purple Sanga, and Vissel Kobe.
At international level, he represented Japan, where he netted an impressive 55 goals in 89 games, but he last played for his country in a competitive match 26 years ago.
After Oliveirense’s final game last season, there was a feeling that Miura would finally call it quits on his football career, but he dispelled the rumours, hinting at playing the game until he was 60.
