  • The French superstar has been strongly linked with Real Madrid in recent transfer windows

Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Kylian Mbappe, has been told to leave the club by former director, Leonardo, in an absurd tirade.

The World Cup-winner recently refuted claims he wants to join Real Madrid this summer, but the rumour simply refuses to go away.

The links to the Spanish giants have created a transfer saga that has dominated the recent windows. There has been a back-and-forth between the French star and the Ligue 1 champions over the issue.

Mbappe recently sent the club a letter, telling them he would not trigger a clause to extend his current deal until 2025, meaning he has one year left of his time in the capital.

Real Madrid made a previous opening bid worth €160 million to buy the Frenchman but were unsuccessful. PSG then signed him to a new three-year contract.

La Liga then filed a complaint with UEFA against PSG and Manchester City for breaking the financial fair play regulations.

Mbappe told to leave PSG

Leonardo, a former director of the French giants, has now stated Mbappe should leave the club because PSG will still exist without him.

"For the good of PSG, I think the time has come for Mbappe to go, no matter what," Leonardo said in an interview with L'Equipe.

He said PSG had existed before the superstar and would exist after he was gone.

"He's been in Paris for six years and, over those six seasons, five different clubs have won the Champions League... That means it's entirely possible to win this competition without him," Leonardo added.

He also questioned Mbappe's leadership ability.

"With his behaviour over the last two years, Mbappe is showing that he's not yet a player capable of really guiding a team. He's a great player, not a leader. He's a great goal-scorer, not a creative one. It's hard to build a team around him."

Mbappe scored 29 goals in Ligue 1 last season to win the Golden Boot for the fifth year in a row, per Transfermarkt, but many feel it's only a matter of time before he leaves the club.

The former Monaco forward became PSG's all-time top scorer in April.

Mbappe outshines Vinicius and Messi

Sports Brief earlier reported on Mbappe topping Vinicius and Lionel Messi to become ESPN’s Player of the Year.

The French phenom saw off competition from his former teammate and the Brazilian to claim the coveted award.

The ESPN award covers the 2022/23 football season, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup which Messi helped win.
