FootballManuel Neuer: Bayern Munich Goalkeeper Suffers Injury Setback
- Manuel Neuer has reportedly suffered a significant setback in his recovery from injury
- The Bayern Munich keeper was expected to return for pre-season but he will need to undergo scans to determine the timeline of his return
- Neuer suffered a horrific injury in December and was ruled out for the season
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have been dealt a massive blow after their goalkeeper Manuel Neuer reportedly suffered a significant setback in his recovery from injury.
The 2014 World Cup winner was ruled out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg while skiing in December.
The veteran goalkeeper was set to return to pre-season training, but a setback means the team will have to do medical checks to determine when the 37-year-old will return, per Sky Sports. Yann Sommer was brought in from Borussia Monchengladbach for the second half of the season.
The 37-year-old suffered a leg fracture while on a skiing tour after Germany were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Neuer has made 488 appearances in total for Bayern since his move from Schalke in 2011, per Transfermarkt. He is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in football's history.
What next for Bayern?
Although the obvious scenario for the German giants is to plan the season with Yann Sommer and Alexander Nübel, the two keepers have linked with moves away from the club.
If Sommer and Nubel move on, the club would need to get another goalkeeper since going into the season with Sven Ulreich as Neuer's backup could backfire. If Neuer fully recovers, Sommer could be pushed to the bench, a situation he may not want to be in.
Thomas Tuchel's side have recently been linked with Valencia shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili, but they are reportedly focused on signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
