Turkish footballers haven't had a long history of success at Real Madrid, but youngster Arda Guler hopes to change that.
The teenager moved from Fenerbahce to the Santiago Bernabeu with a lot of potential but also under a lot of pressure because the fee for his services could reach €30 million in addition to the €15 million in commission paid to Guler's father.
The attacking midfielder who has scored goals for Turkey's national team already and has played for Fenerbahce's first team since he was just 16 years old.
He quickly earned the moniker "The Turkish Messi," due to his dribbling and playmaking abilities.
Now that he has chosen Real Madrid over Barcelona, who were also very interested in signing him, that nickname will be dropped.
Naturally, his aim will be to become the greatest Turkish player to have represented Real Madrid, after his predecessors failed to impress the Bernabeu faithful.
Sports Brief analyses the performance of Turkish players who donned the famous White shirt.
Nuri Sahin
It's fair to say that Nuri Sahin's time at Real Madrid promised much but fell short of expectations.
In the summer of 2011, he moved from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid, citing a desire to collaborate with Jose Mourinho as a reason for making the move.
Sahin only made ten appearances during his one full season at the club, which began after it had already been delayed by injury. In the Copa del Rey, he scored once and assisted once against SD Ponferradina.
He was loaned to Liverpool in the summer of 2012, where he once more struggled to make an impression.
Enzo Fernandez sends subtle warning to Chelsea rivals ahead of Pochettino takeover
FootballA deal was reached between Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund to end his loan. He then moved to Dortmund for six months after only half a season in the Premier League.
He stated, via 90min: "I realised that as a footballer and a human being, I belong here 100 percent" while on the move at the time. Sahin added, "I quickly realised that Dortmund is the only team I want to play for."
Sahin's time at Real Madrid came to an end when Dortmund exercised a clause to permanently purchase him back for €7 million at the end of that 2013–14 season.
Hamit Altintop
Hamit Altintop is the only other Turkish player to play for Real Madrid. He arrived in the same summer as Sahin but on a free transfer from Bayern Munich after agreeing to a four-year contract.
With just one goal in 12 appearances, Altintop was unable to integrate into the team and only completed one season of his long-term contract.
Real Madrid made a small profit because he was sold to Galatasaray for €3.5 million after a year. He would play for Darmstadt after his contract with Galatasaray was terminated due to two seasons of injuries and fan outrage after a terrible cup match display.
