The former Union Berlin striker was also among the stars as the Super Eagles beat Sierra Leone 3-2 to qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Awoniyi has been wanting to see the Kwara State Governor since 2020 and finally got his chance. According to the post Abdulrasaq shared on his official Twitter page, the forward also gifted him with a football jersey.

Governor Abdulrahman hails Awoniyi

The Kwara State Governor lauded Awoniyi for his contribution to the growth of local football talent, by inspiring young players to shine as he has.

"Similarly, he has continued to give back to the communities that raised him in various areas, including education and healthcare. That typifies good leadership and a great connection to his roots. That is the hallmark of philanthropy and human greatness that defines this inimitable international player. We are proud of you and all that you do for our community, Awoniyi. Keep the flag flying," he added.

Sports Brief spoke exclusively with Awoniyi on his meeting with Governor Abdulrahman, and the Nigerian forward expressed happiness.

"Finally - it was nice talking with him and I must confess that he is a good man who wants the best for the state and the nation. He urged me to score 20 goals in the coming EPL season and I have promised him to do my best."

Awoniyi worked as a bricklayer

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Awoniyi's tough journey in football on the streets of Ilorin in the Kwara State, claiming he had to do many menial jobs to even afford boots.

The Nigerian striker, who had just returned to Nottingham Forest after being out of action for two months due to an injury, looked back at the difficulties he faced in his career.
