Ghanaian forward Kwadwo 'Mahala' Opoku has joined CF Montreal from MLS champions Los Angeles FC.
The 21-year-old joins the Canadian outfit for $1,650,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money and $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money. Montreal also acquired $100,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money from LAFC in return for a 2023 international roster spot.
Opoku was part of the LAFC team that won their first-ever Major League Soccer title in 2022, scoring an important goal in the Western Conference final against Austin FC.
"Hi Montreal fans. How are you guys doing. This is Opoku and I am really excited to get started. See you guys soon," he said in a video confirming his switch.
The talented Ghanaian winger moved to the United States in 2021, joining LAFC from Attram de Visser Academy. He made 60 regular season appearances for the Banc of California outfit, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists.
“We are very pleased with this acquisition. He is a young player who already possesses good experience in the league, notably having won the MLS Cup last year as a decisive player with LAFC," said CF Montréal Vice-President and Chief Sporting Officer Olivier Renard, as quoted by the club's official website.
“He will offer us something different from our existing player pool, with his speed and one-on-one ability. It is a profile we've been lacking in our squad. I am convinced he will be able to continue his progression with us.”
Opoku played for the U17 and U20 teams of Ghana and was invited to the U23 team for the AFCON championship but failed to travel due to club duties.
