FootballHow Manchester City Failed to Heed Yaya Toure’s Advice Over Senegalese Superstar Sadio Mane
- Sadio Mane would have played for Manchester City had the club officials listened to Yaya Toure
- Ivorian legend, Toure had urged the club to sign the Senegalese winger while he was at Southampton
- Mane went on to win several titles with Liverpool, including the UEFA Champions League
Manchester City legend, Yaya Toure has disclosed that he earlier urged the club to sign Sadio Mane while the Senegalese was at Southampton.
In 2016, Mane made a mega-money move to Liverpool, and in no time, he was part of the squad that won the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds.
City would have enjoyed those peak performances had they heeded the advice of Ivorian superstar Toure, who had a blistering career at the Etihad Stadium.
Toure told BBC Match of the Day Africa:
“I always wanted to play with him [Mane]. When I was at City, at the time when he was at Southampton, I highly regarded him and I was asking some of my superiors to just sign him.
“But in the end it just didn't happen. After that Klopp had the eyes to get him and now look what he did for Liverpool, he was brilliant. I like him, I like him as a player.”
Mane netted 120 goals for Liverpool in 269 matches in all competitions. He won six major titles with the Merseyside outfit.
City fared admirably enough without him, with Toure helping to put the foundations in place for them on which a dynasty of history-making success has been enjoyed by the 2022-23 Treble winners, GOAL reports.
Toure appointed Standard Liege manager
Sports Brief earlier reported that Yaya Toure was recently named first-team coach at Belgium topflight side Standard Liege.
The 40-year-old will join the technical team as assistant coach to Carl Heofkens alongside Frazer Robertson ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Toure has been working as an academy coach at English club Tottenham Hotspur for the past 18 months.
