  • Manchester United’s message to David De Gea did not go down well with sections of fans
  • The club commented on De Gea’s photo on the same day the goalie became a free agent
  • De Gea tied the knot with his long-time lover Edurne on Saturday, July 1

Football fans have taken to social media to slam Manchester United for apparent ‘disrespect’ after the club sent a short message to David De Gea barely 24 hours after he became a free agent.

As of July 2, De Gea remains without a club after his contract at Old Trafford ended despite confidence that he would have signed a new deal beforehand.

The Spaniard, however, did not let the disappointment of the botched contract get in the way of his big day as he wedded his partner Edurne in a lavish ceremony on July 1 in in Menorca.

Photos shared by the couple on social media showed them all smiles, with De Gea rocking a swanky black tuxedo while his bride was in an elegant gown.

In his caption, De Gea said, 'We couldn't be happier', among those who commented was Manchester United through the club’s official Instagram handle.

Despite the club's congratulatory message, fans monitoring De Gea’s contract situation felt it was disrespectful for United to be messaging the goalie with lingering uncertainty over his future.

: 'Are u kidding?? You let this man lose a job on a wedding day.' One fan said.
'This club has no shame… you’ve been so disrespectful to him!'

Another fan labelled it ‘foul behaviour’; while other fans responded with “The disrespect.

De Gea’s United situation

As it stands, it is yet to be determined where De Gea would play next.

United reportedly offered him a new contract with considerably lower wages from his previous £375,000-a-week, but the Spaniard reportedly decided to bid his time.

Reports claim United boss Erik Ten Hag grew increasingly impatient and started exploring other options, including Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Meanwhile, interesting reports from The Sun have suggested De Gea could be lined up for a move to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he would reunite with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

United’s back up in case they miss Onana

Sports Brief also reported on Manchester United’s options in case they missed out on Andre Onana, who could prove to be too expensive.

The Red Devils are now training their focus on Feyenoord's Justin Bijlow and Eintracht Frankfurt's Kevin Trapp. The former could cost around 25 million euros while the more experienced Trapp could cost 10 million euros.

Ten Hag's side could still move in for Onana comfortably, should they be able to sell players. Dean Henderson could complete a permanent move to Nottingham Forrest.
