Swallows took to social media earlier today (July 2, 2023) to announce that former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Steve Komphela, would be taking over the reins of the side.

The club stated that they wanted to take things to the next level and were excited to have attracted the services of Coach Komphela.

An experienced manager who has been in charge of teams like Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Gold Arrows, according to Transfermarkt, the 56-year-old will add a lot of experience to the Swallows side.

Komphela will also take a trophy-winning mentality to the side, having won the league title with Sundowns.

Sundowns wish Coach Steve well

Following the announcement of his appointment, Sundowns took to social media to wish Komphela success with his new job.

"Steve Komphela served Mamelodi Sundowns with loyalty and devotion and will always be a member of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family. We wish him everything of the best," Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe said.

Komphela hunts for samp

You can't get a beer at the stadiums in Qatar, but neither can you get samp and beans with meat.

That’s something Steve Komphela found out when he went looking for the South African delicacy, Sports Brief reported.

The South African coach took to Twitter to share a video of him meeting two Mzansi chefs in Qatar. Komphela can be heard joking with the chefs, asking if they served samp and beans with meat.

Orlando Pirates wanted Coach Komphela

Before Swallows secured Komphela’s signature, another Soweto side were interested in him.

Sports Brief reported that Orlando Pirates were considering Komphela as a possible future head coach.

At that stage, they were also looking at Benni McCarthy, Pitso Mosimane, Dan Malesela, Cavin Johnson, Gavin Hunt and Spaniard Pablo Franco Martin.
