  • Danny Drinkwater’s move to Chelsea is one he would probably wish never happened
  • Drinkwater won the Premier League with Leicester City alongside N’golo Kante in 2016
  • He was released by Chelsea last year after five disastrous years and 12 League games

Former Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater is making a call out to clubs who are looking to sign free agents this summer, over a year after the London club released him.

Drinkwater formed a solid midfield partnership with N’golo Kante to help Leicester City win the fairytale Premier League in the 2015/16 season under head coach Claudio Ranieri.

Kante left for West London immediately, retained the league title under Antonio Conte, and was named the league’s best player before the 33-year-old joined his partner.

According to BBC Sports, the two-time UEFA Champions League winners paid £35m for the Englishman, more than they paid for the France international, and it is obvious to tell which was worth the money.

Drinkwater without football for 427 days

The midfielder, who received three England caps, played 12 league games for the Stamford Bridge outfit. He went on four loans, including to Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super Lig.

A loan move to Championship side Reading gave him some minutes under his legs, but it was also the last time he played a football match. His final game came in the 1-0 home loss to West Brom at the Madejski Stadium; he is now pleading to return to football after 427 days.

“I want to be excited about a project,” he said in an exclusive interview with SportBible. “I’m just waiting for something to excite me. I need that burning feeling again.”
“I’m sat here, twiddling my thumbs. I’m just buzzing to get involved again,” he added.

The Manchester United academy graduate admitted it was hard to pinpoint where it all went wrong in what looked to be a promising career where he made 34 appearances for a league-winning team.

Drinkwater’s emotional farewell to Chelsea

Sports Brief reported that Drinkwater bid Chelsea fans goodbye with an emotional and honest message after five disastrous years at Stamford Bridge.

He admitted injuries and mistakes he made off the pitch, attributed to how his time at the club went, a situation neither party is happy nor proud of. He, however, did not dwell on the excuses but looked at the beautiful moments.
