  • West Ham and Arsenal have reportedly agreed on a fee of £105m including add-ons for Declan Rice
  • The Hammers confirmed the midfielder’s departure after winning the UEFA Conference League
  • He is now the most expensive British player of all time but falls short of the most expensive Premier League transfer

Arsenal and West Ham reportedly agreed to a fee of £105m for transferring English midfielder Declan Rice across the London clubs.

Rice gave the green light to join the Gunners days ago after Hammers chairman David Sullivan confirmed he would be allowed to leave after winning the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Sports Brief looks at the six most expensive fees a Premier League club has paid as Rice becomes the most expensive British player.

1. Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea

Chelsea secured the services of Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Young Player of the Year on the January window deadline day from Benfica for £106.8m, as reported by The Guardian. The Blues beat initial resistance from club president Rui Costa.

2. Declan Rice to Arsenal

According to The Athletic, the fee for the 24-year-old midfielder will be £100m plus £5m add-ons. The two clubs agreed on the price but are still discussing the payment structure, as the Irons want it paid in 18 months.

3. Jack Grealish to Manchester City

Manchester City failed in their pursuit of Harry Kane after Tottenham rejected a £125m in the summer of 2021. They quickly moved to Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish for £100m, and it was the most expensive British and Premier League transfer then.

4. Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea

Shortly after helping Inter Milan win their first Scudetto in 10 years, the Blues paid £97.5m to re-sign former striker Romelu Lukaku. The transfer has been disastrous, and Inter are willing to re-sign him on loan with an obligation to buy for £25m.

5. Paul Pogba to Manchester United

Paul Pogba rejoined Manchester United in 2016 for a world-record fee of £93.25m from Juventus. The French midfielder spent six years at Old Trafford and returned to Turin on a free transfer last summer.

6. Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United

The Belgian featured once again. He moved from Everton to United for £90m in 2017. According to Transfermarkt, he has the highest combined transfer fee of any player, costing clubs £287.76m to move him about.

Highest Premier League wage bills

Sports Brief analysed the top 6 highest Premier League wage bills, and unsurprisingly it is the traditional big 6 of the English first division.

Chelsea lead the pack with a yearly wage of £216.6m, treble winners Manchester City settle for third while Tottenham are sixth with an annual bill of £110.2m
