  • Wojciech Szczesny suffered a heart scare during a Europa League game in April
  • The Juventus goalkeeper was substituted at half-time and returned days later
  • The former Arsenal goalkeeper has now opened up on his terrifying experience

Juventus goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, has revealed he truly thought he was going to die after being substituted at half-time of a Europa League game in April.

In the moments prior, Szczesny stated his chest felt heavy and as if it was 'going to explode', during the quarter-final first-leg game against Portuguese giants, Sporting Lisbon.

He sat out a Serie A game that weekend but was ready to face the same opposition a week later, helping Juventus reach the semi-final where they were knocked out by eventual winners, Sevilla.

Mirror UK reports that the cause of his scare remains unknown, with tests showing all was fine with the former Arsenal goalkeeper, who enjoyed a decent campaign despite the Old Lady’s troubled season.

Szczesny details his heart scare

The 33-year-old Polish international opened up on the incident for the first time in an interview with Canal Plus Polonia, revealing his biggest fear at the time.

“It was scary. I really thought I was going to die... I felt like my heart was about to explode. During a corner kick, I told [Arkadiusz Milik] I was hurt, but the Sporting players were already taking a corner kick. The chest pain was horrible. To this day, we don't know the reason. Probably back or spine problems.”

Heart problems are becoming more prevalent in football - they cut the career of Sergio Aguero short and Manchester United midfielder, Christian Eriksen, had to make a miraculous comeback after a cardiac arrest at Euro 2021.

Brighton and Zambia midfielder, Enock Mwepu, was forced to retire after discovering a hereditary heart problem.

Sergio Aguero’s mini heart scare

In related coverage, Sports Brief reported on Aguero suffering a mini heart scare during a Twitch live stream with one of Spain’s biggest streamers, Ibai Llanos.

The former Man City striker paused during the steam and placed his palm on his chest, but later claimed his chip would have picked up if anything was wrong.
