FootballBarcelona Star Upset Over Ilkay Gundogan Signing, Fears He Will Be Benched by Xavi
- Gavi is reportedly unhappy with Barcelona's acquisition of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan
- The 18-year-old reportedly believes his position in the starting lineup is under threat
- Gavi has earned widespread recognition as one of Europe's exceptional young talents
Barcelona's young midfielder, Gavi, is reportedly upset with the club's recent signing of Ilkay Gundogan in the ongoing summer transfer window.
Gundogan, who enjoyed a successful seven-season spell at Manchester City, has joined the Catalan giants on a two-year contract, bidding farewell to his trophy-laden tenure with the English club.
Having led the Citizens to a historic treble in the 2022-23 season, including the coveted UEFA Champions League title, the German midfielder's arrival at Barcelona has been hailed as a significant achievement for the reigning La Liga champions, Sky Sports reports.
However, this acquisition seems to have unsettled one of the rising stars within the Catalans' squad.
Gavi unhappy with Gundogan move
As revealed by El Nacional and reported by Sportskeeda, Gavi is concerned that his playing time and opportunities will be diminished at Barcelona under the management of Xavi next season.
The 18-year-old prodigy, who only missed two matches during a triumphant La Liga campaign and made a total of 49 appearances, fears he will be overshadowed by Gundogan and benched.
Despite recently renewing his contract, the Spanish midfielder is reportedly struggling to come to terms with this transfer. Gavi's apprehensions may be well-founded, considering the wealth of experience and expertise the former Borussia Dortmund star brings to the team.
Gavi inks new Barca deal
Meanwhile, the Catalans are determined to hold on to the young starlet and offered Gavi a new contract over five years at Camp Nou, Sports Brief reported.
He is regarded as one of the best young players in the world and has been monitored by several top clubs in Europe since his debut in 2021 for Barcelona.
According to reports, the proposed new deal for the 17-year-old, whose present deal runs out in 2023, will boast an impressive €1 billion release clause.
