  • Football labels are mostly controversial as many opinions of the sport generally are
  • AI model chatbox Chat GPT was asked to select the most overrated XI in the Premier League
  • The answers expectedly came back controversial as it includes a five-time title winner

Labels are a thing in football, and apportioning them to players is often myopic and based on a particular perspective, leaving others based on bias or agenda.

Legends, icons, flops, underrated and overrated are some of the controversial labels thrown around in football, with the Premier League’s significant media presence generating the most debate.

Sports Brief looks at the Premier League’s overrated XI according to Chat GPT in an unconventional 3-3-4 formation, as first reported by GiveMeSport, and it includes a five-time League winner.

GK - Joe Hart

Hart won two PL titles with Manchester City before Pep Guardiola binned him and has had a nomadic career since then. The AI picks the current Celtic goalie as the most overrated to ever grace the league.

Defenders

Phil Jones

Jones will leave Manchester United at the expiration of his contract in a few days after 12 years. Once rated as one of the brightest prospects of English football, injuries dampened his time at Old Trafford, but he won a league title in 2013.

John Stones

Probably the most surprising of them all, Stones is a five-time League winner with City. According to Sun Sport, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry predicted the current evolution of the player when he joined the Citizens in 2016.

Luke Shaw

Another one from Manchester clubs, Luke Shaw was the most expensive teenager when he joined United from Southampton. The AI cited his inconsistency and lack of fitness for him making the list.

Midfielders

Tom Cleverly

Cleverly was highly rated when he broke onto the scene at United under Sir Alex Ferguson but failed to live up to the hype. He has gone on four loans since leaving the club and currently plays for Watford.

Jack Wilshere

Once touted as one of the best English midfielders, multiple injuries meant Jack Wilshere never fulfilled his potential. At 31, he is retired and is Arsenal’s U18 youth coach.

Stewart Downing

The former Liverpool and Middlesbrough attacker never lived up to the hype on him as a youngster, and his major career honours were a few League Cups and runners-up medals.

Forwards

Andriy Shevchenko

The Ukrainian forward arrived at Stamford Bridge with a big reputation and a hefty price. He scored only nine league goals in two seasons before departing on loan to AC Milan.

Roberto Soldado

He was a club-record signing for Tottenham at £26m and arrived with a prolific reputation. He never hit the heights and scored seven league goals in two years before returning to Spain.

Andy Carroll

At 34, Carroll is still an active professional at Championship club Reading. He played for Newcastle United, West Ham and also Liverpool amongst others but never reached the promising heights he had.

Memphis Depay

The Dutch forward arrived at Old Trafford with big potential but never replicated it. He returned to Lyon after and has played for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid since then.

Manager - David Moyes

Moyes has been in management for 25 years and won his first major honour - the UEFA Europa Conference League with West Ham weeks ago. He spent 11 years at Everton and is tainted by a disastrous eight months at Manchester United.

Wilshere reveals his worst injury

Sports Brief reported that one of AI’s most overrated players Jack Wilshere revealed his worst injury on a podcast with former PL goalie Ben Forster.

The Arsenal academy star named his first injury his worst, and he only found out six years later that the doctor did not think he would walk again, not to talk of playing.
