The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has stated that the proposed African Super League will kick off in October.
Motsepe also disclosed that there are plans to give the tournament a new name in order to attract more sponsors.
According to stakeholders, the competition is planned to yield huge financial returns as it is expected to attract over $100 million that will be used to improve infrastructure and promote the game on the continent.
The CAF boss, who was at the FIFPRO Africa Congress in Gaborone, Botswana, also narrated why the tournament would be beneficial to the players in particular. He said via GOAL:

Football"In October this year, the inaugural Super League will commence; some people were asking for the dates, we have it.
"Some of the big sponsors are saying 'the history of the Super League in Europe was not good.'
"If you associate the name 'super' with a football competition, it has negative connotations. We may change the name, but what indeed is going to happen in October is the inaugural. I will keep using the name 'the African Super League' until we change it.
"African players, like all footballers all over the world, have a short life and as long as they are playing they have to make as much money as possible."
Sports Brief earlier reported that South African attacker Percy Tau and his Al Ahly teammates were spotted celebrating after winning this season’s CAF Champions League.

Tau finished the campaign with five goals and five assists and was instrumental in the Egyptian side’s success.
