  • Roger Fetumba has challenged Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs to provide competition for Mamelodi Sundowns
  • The Brazilians now only won their sixth league title in a row last season, but also wrapped up their 13 title overall
  • Pirates finished second behind Sundowns last season, but were a massive 16 points behind Masandawana

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs challenging Mamelodi Sundowns will be good for football.

That’s according to Masandawana legend Roger Feutmba, who has weighed in on his former side’s dominance.

As noted by Far Post, Fetumba laid down a challenge to the Buccaneers and Amakhosi ahead of the new season.

“It is time Chiefs and Pirates have strong teams that will make things difficult for Sundowns next season for the benefit of football generally. If Sundowns continue to dominate in the Premiership race, people will start to lose interest in watching football or going to the stadium,” he said.
“We know that Sundowns always play good football, but Chiefs and Pirates should also come to the party. We want an interesting competitive league,” Fetumba added.

The 54-year-old, who was known as ‘The General’, added that the fans didn’t want a league in which they knew Sundowns would dominate again.

The Brazilians won the sixth league title in a row last season and their 13th overall.

Pirates secure cup double

With Fetumba calling for a challenge, one of the two Soweto giants might be in a prime position to do so.

Pirates did finish second in the league last season, albeit 16 points behind the champions. As noted by iDiskiTimes, José Riveiro's men also won the MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs, unfortunately, didn’t have anything to brag about last season. The Amakhosi finished fifth and failed to qualify for any continental competitions. As noted by The South African, Chiefs also suffered a record 12 losses in the league during the 2022/23 season.

Broos criticises Pirates and Chiefs

Fetumba isn’t the only person who wants a stronger Pirates and Chiefs.

National team coach Hugo Broos also expressed concern over Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance.

Broos said it wasn’t good for the country when Pirates and Chiefs weren’t performing at a high level, Sports Brief reported.
