FootballLuis Suarez Hailed As ‘Idol’ by Liverpool Star Amid Retirement Rumours
- Luis Suarez is reportedly considering retirement due to severe and constant knee pain
- The 36-year-old joined Brazilian club Gremio after leaving his boyhood club Nacional
- Liverpool's Darwin Nunez hailed his Uruguayan compatriot amid retirement rumours
Darwin Nunez has hailed Luis Suarez as his idol amid claims the former Liverpool striker is set to announce his retirement from professional football.
Suarez moved to Brazilian side, Gremio, after leaving his boyhood club, Nacional, after just one season which saw the team claim a league and cup double - a feat he first achieved in 2006.
The Uruguayan star has also helped Gremio to two trophies since joining in January, but his time in the South American nation could be cut short.
Suarez scored in yesterday’s 3-1 win against Ameirca Mineiro, days after the club president confirmed he plays through pain and daily injections, and could be fitted with a prosthetic, as Mirror UK reports.
Nunez hails Suarez as idol
Nunez is seen as the man who can take up Suarez’s mantle at Merseyside, but a first season in which he scored just nine league goals has done him no good.
The former Benfica striker appeared on Shoot For Love, where his shot power and shooting accuracy were measured in a series of fun games.
At the end of his session, Nunez was asked if he had seen the 36-year-old’s episode and he replied 'yes', before acknowledging Suarez as his friend and idol.
The Liverpool star then thumped his chest three times as a sign of love.
Nunez clearly has the personality of his compatriot, having played alongside him for Uruguay at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The 22-year-old is aggressive and can also wind up opponents, which was why he was shown a straight red card on his Anfield debut against Crystal Palace.

FootballAndy Cole rejects Nunez comparison
Sports Brief also reported on former Manchester United striker, Andy Cole slamming comparisons to Nunez after the legend’s first season was used to justify the Uruguayan’s struggles.
Cole did not take the comments lightly, going on to list his achievements - including five Premier League titles - and reiterated he is happily retired and does not want 'noise' over his name.
