  • Chelsea Women's star, Sam Kerr has been ranked as the best female football player
  • Newly-minted European champions Barcelona dominate the top 10 places
  • The Women's World Cup will get underway in less than a month

EA Sports has released a list of its best female footballers ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup next month. The quadriennial showpiece will be staged in New Zealand and Australia from July 20.

Chelsea and Australia striker, Sam Kerr has been named the best player according to the rankings. She has a rating of 91, joint top with reigning Ballon d'Or winner and Barcelona star, Alexia Putellas.

Kerr will be expected to play a key role in her nation's World Cup campaign. She will be hoping that the home advantage will fuel the Matildas past their Group B opponents of Canada, Ireland, and Nigeria.

Putellas, meanwhile, is still working her way back to full fitness after suffering a damaging Achilles injury. She returned just in time to help Barcelona lift another Champions League title as they beat Wolfsburg in the final.

Third on EA's list is Putella's club teammate, Caroline Graham Hansen, who has a joint 90 rating alongside USA striker, Alex Morgan, Norway's Ada Hegerberg, and Lyon and France defender, Wendie Renard.

England defender, Luzy Bronze also ranks highly. She is part of Sarina Wiegman's team, who will be hoping to go two steps further than they did in the 2019 World Cup edition staged in France, where they reached the semi-final. The Lionesses also recently won the Euros.

The United States are the reigning champions after they beat Netherlands 2-0 in 2019, as captured by FIFA.

Chelsea Women retain title

Previously, Sports Brief reported that Chelsea Women successfully retained their Women's Super League title after beating Reading 3-0 on May 27.

Heading into the final day, Chelsea Women needed a win to secure a fourth consecutive title ahead of Manchester United Women, who were facing Liverpool Women at the same time.

It was a game that had serious ramifications at both ends of the table, with Reading requiring maximum points to retain their top-flight status. Emma Hayes' side, however, quickly settled in at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
