FootballSandro Tonali: Newcastle Target Accused of Lying by Italian Fans As He Nears Premier League Move
- Newcastle United are close to completing the transfer of Italian midfielder, Sandro Tonali
- AC Milan will receive a whopping £60m while Tonali’s salary will be quadrupled, including bonuses
- His previous comment on a Premier League move has now resurfaced, which has angered Italian fans
Sandro Tonali’s transfer to Newcastle United is edging closer, and it has not only hurt AC Milan fans, but also the entire Italian Calcio fans.
Tonali is seen as an emblem of Milan’s culture and is tipped as a future captain, having been part of the 2021/22 Serie A winning team and growing up a boyhood Milan fan.
The departure of club legend Paolo Maldini as director following a tense exchange with club owners and the financial difficulties at the club have made it easy for Rossoneri to accept the sale of one of their own.
The Athletic reports that Newcastle will pay a fee in the region of €70m to Milan, while Tonali’s current salary of €2.5m will be raised to €8m plus €2m in bonuses per year.
Tonali’s old comments resurface
There has been widespread outrage since the news broke last night. The anger has been directed at Milan owners for the Maldini incident, while others accused the Premier League of financially bullying other leagues.
The 22-year-old was quizzed about a move to the English top flight in 2021, and his current situation shows he has reneged on his words.
“I know what I did to get to this jersey, and I would never make the mistake of walking away. I know it’s difficult, especially in today’s football, but my dream is to become a flag bearer for Milan,” he said, via GIFN.
This has not gone down well with Calcio fans, some of whom have accused the Italy U-21 captain of being swayed by money while others tried to understand his situation.
Tonali advises AC Milan
Sports Brief reported that Tonali advised Milan to keep players to help them retain their Serie A title, which, unfortunately, they lost to Napoli.
Talk about irony; the player who advised the club to keep players is one of the first exits after the club lost the title and missed out on UEFA Champions League final after losing to rivals Inter Milan.
