Dani Carvajal hopes Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric will one day win an international trophy with Croatia after he suffered another heartbreak in the Nations League.

The 37-year-old midfielder has fallen at the final hurdle twice after losing the 2018 World Cup final to France and, most recently, in the Nations League final to Spain.

Spain completed a 5-4 shoot-out win over Croatia to claim victory in the third Nations League final after extra-time saw an absorbing match finish goalless in Rotterdam, Eurosport reports.

Carvajal, who converted the winning penalty for Spain, revealed after the game that he did not celebrate much with his teammates but went to console Modric.

The dramatic finale denied Modric the chance of a first major trophy for Croatia on his record 166th appearance for his country in Sunday’s Nations League final.

Carvajal practiced his Panenka penalty

Meanwhile, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has revealed Dani Carvajal had been practising the Panenka penalty, which he converted to win the Nations League, Eurosport reports.

Carvajal converted the winning penalty as La Roja completed a 5-4 shoot-out win over Croatia to claim the Nations League, Spain’s first international trophy in 12 years.

Bruno Petkovic saw his penalty saved by Unai Simon in the Spain goal at De Kuip before the Real Madrid player kept his cool to audaciously slot the ball down the centre.

Football fans sympathise with Modric

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Spain’s triumph served as redemption for their previous disappointment, but for Vatreni captain, Luka Modric, it cast a shadow over his illustrious career, potentially leaving him without an international trophy.

The devastated 2018 Ballon d'Or recipient experienced the anguish of losing a final once again, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from fans on social media who recognised the heart-wrenching nature of the result for the esteemed Real Madrid midfielder.

Despite Croatia's impressive journey to their second-ever final in a major tournament, they fell agonisingly short once again.
