  • Hugo Broos is not impressed that Zakhele Lepasa is not getting enough playing time at the club level
  • Lepasa has been impressive for Bafana Bafana in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series

The head coach of South Africa’s national football team Hugo Broos has expressed disappointment over Zakhele Lepasa’s lack of playing time at his club.

Lepasa, who is currently on loan at SuperSport United from Orlando Pirates, managed just nine games for the Buccaneers in 2023.

The 26-year-old was on the scoresheet as Bafana Bafana defeated the Atlas Lions of Morocco to confirm their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

He has scored three goals and set up two more in just five games for Bafana since making his debut for the country in 2019, GOAL reports.

Broos disclosed that Lepasa has always done very well whenever he puts the national team jersey on.

Broos said via iDiski Times:

“I said it already in the past, Zakhele is always a player in his club who has problems.
“He didn’t play at Pirates, now also at SuperSport he doesn’t play every game or just parts of the game.
“I really don’t understand it. I give him confidence because he is a good striker. He is a good striker but you have to give him confidence, first of all.
“Still, he has to improve. But I’m very happy, I’m very happy with him. Every game he played, he made an important goal. He scored in Liberia…
“I don’t think for defenders it’s nice to play against him, he’s always in movement, he’s quick. Things that we ask, he does. We ask him, ‘Zakhele go deep, you’re quick’ [and] all the game he did it.”

Hugo Broos hails Percy Tau

Sports Brief earlier reported that Hugo Broos is finally happy with the performances he is seeing from Percy Tau.

The Al Ahly attacker was in fine form as Bafana Bafana beat Morocco in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The South Africans won the game 2-1 thanks to a Munir Mohamedi own goal from a Tau cross and a Zakhele Lepasa second-half goal.
