  • Erling Haaland arrived in a top 5 European League with Borussia Dortmund in January 2020
  • He became one of the best goal-scorers and picked up the EPL golden boot on debut season
  • Robert Lewandowski is the only player to have scored more league goals than the Norwegian

Erling Haaland is in the form of his life and helped Manchester City to a historic treble in his first season after his £51 million move from Borussia Dortmund.

He was the Premier League’s highest goal-scorer with 36 goals, surpassing the single-season record of 34 goals held by legends, Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole.

The 22-year-old is two goals shy of reaching a century of league goals in the European top 5 since his arrival in the Bundesliga in January three years ago.

Sports Brief looks at the top 10 highest goal-scorers in the big leagues since January 2020, as first analysed by Planet Football.

1. Robert Lewandowski

The Polish striker appeared to have been spurred on by Haaland’s arrival in the top European league. He has scored 114 goals and won three consecutive golden boots in that time - two in Bundesliga and one in La Liga.

2. Erling Haaland

The Norwegian goal machine himself moved from RB Salzburg to Germany in January 2020. Since then, he has scored 98 league goals, including 36 in his first season in England.

3. Kylian Mbappe

The World Cup winner has 91 league goals in the time under review. He has won five consecutive Ligue 1 golden boots and is Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time top scorer. He confirmed he will leave when his contract expires in 2024, as reported by Daily Post Nigeria.

4. Ciro Immobile

The Italian striker has scored 78 goals during this time for SS Lazio. He is a four-time Serie A golden boot winner, including a record-equalling 36 goals in the 2019/20 season.

5. Karim Benzema

The reigning Ballon d’Or winner has scored 78 league goals since the turn of the new year 2020. He led Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double previously before sealing a big-money move to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

6. Harry Kane

With 77 league goals since January 2020, Kane continues to set goals records in England and with Tottenham Hotspur. He is both club and country’s all-time top scorer and is 47 goals away from surpassing Shearer as Premier League record scorer.

7. Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian king has 74 goals this time and has been a vital member of the Liverpool squad that won all possible trophies, and is the only one left of the deadly trio he formed with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

8. Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese superstar left for Al-Nassr in January, and despite having low-scoring seasons at Juventus and Manchester United, he makes the list with 69 league goals in three years.

9. Lautaro Martinez

The Argentine striker is a potent goal-scorer and has been hitting double-digit league goals for four years. He scored 21 Serie A goals last season and has amassed 65 league goals since January 2020.

10. Lionel Messi

The greatest of them all, Lionel Messi evolved with age and has been more of a playmaker than goal-scorer in the past seasons. However, that has not stopped him from recording 64 goals between Barcelona and PSG.

Top league single-season record scorers

Sports Brief analysed top leagues single-season record scorers after Haaland set a new Premier League milestone with 36 goals in his first season.

He has scored the lowest among other leagues’ top scorers, with Messi having 50 La Liga goals in 2011/12, the most of all top European leagues.
