The pair have won almost every available trophy with their respective teams, as well as many individual honours.
Their dominance has seen them win an incredible 12 Ballon d'Or awards between them, with Messi securing the prestigious individual prize on seven occasions.
While some fans have chosen to appreciate the duo's success equally, most have pitted them against each other in an unending debate about who is the greatest of all time.
According to GiveMeSport, so raging has the debate been, that footballers and pundits have also often been put to task to choose between the two.
GOAT debate: Drury's epic answer
Legendary football commentator, Peter Drury has not been an exception.
Back in 2020, the Premier League commentator was put to task to declare who he feels is the greatest of all time.
In an interview by Nana Aba Anamoah, the Englishman inadvertently named Messi the GOAT with a poetic yet epic response.
"We’ve been fortunate to have careers running parallel of possibly the two greatest players there have ever been.
"And the interesting thing about them is that they are, while both brilliant, actually quite different."
He continued:
"Ronaldo looks like an athlete, doesn’t he? I mean, he is a remarkable specimen of a human being; Messi looks like the boy next door and performs like a god."
